Shriners Children’s Chicago History
Our hospital on the outskirts of Chicago has been changing children’s lives for 100 years. Members of Shriners International, a men’s fraternity of fun, fellowship and philanthropy, opened the Chicago Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in March 1926. At the time, only families who could not afford to pay for orthopedic care were accepted.
In the early 1920s, a group of Shriners from Chicago’s Medinah Temple, sought to create a country retreat. The group was looking for rolling terrain, bountiful trees and an ample water supply. Several parcels of land in an area then known as Meacham, in Northern DuPage County, were selected to build Chicago’s finest private golf courses. The oasis for Shriner members was built as a “wonder spot” of congenial atmosphere to accommodate and promote the fellowship of Shrine members and their families.
The clubhouse at Medinah Country Club and the Chicago Shriners Hospital were dedicated and opened together under the observance of the Shrine’s Imperial Potentate amongst many other Council dignitaries in March 1926.
